4th North Dakota Governor. Moving with his family moved to Ontario, Canada, he later relocated to North Dakota and engaged in farming. Entering politics, he served in the Dakota Territorial Council, was a delegate to the North Dakota Constitutional Convention in 1889 and was a member of the North Dakota Senate. He was then the North Dakota Lieutenant Governor, and in 1894, he was elected as a Republican the 4th Governor of Governor, serving until 1897. While office, a dairy products bill was sanctioned, a state geological survey was approved and a historical commission was established. After his term, he retired from politics and resumed farming until his death at age 87.
