William Leon "Bill" Barham passed away after a long illness on Monday, Dec. 24, 2007. Born March 5, 1924, in Birmingham, Ala., he was the son of Thomas E. and Mattie R. Barham. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Rosemary Bruns Barham; three daughters, Carol Barham, of Andover, Mass., Elizabeth Austin, of Sacramento, Calif., and Charlotte Barham, of Berkeley, Calif.; three grandchildren, Ellen Ames, Peter Austin and Michael Austin; sister, Jane Davenport, of Thorsby, Ala.; and his brother, Ed Barham, of Knoxville, Tenn. He was predeceased by his brothers, Sam J. Barham and Thomas E. Barham; and his sister, Peggy E. Pugh. Bill received a bachelor's degree in science and literature in 1947, a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering in 1952 and a master of science degree in chemical engineering in 1954 from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University), where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He earned a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from LSU in 1957. Bill served in the military during World War II from December 1942 until his honorable discharge with the rank of first lieutenant in March 1946. Bill spent his entire working career of 31 years with Kaiser Aluminum in Baton Rouge, Oakland, California, India, Jamaica and Australia. He was involved in the design, start-up and operation of Kaiser's plants. After his retirement in 1986, he continued as a part-time consultant to Kaiser. He also served his community as a volunteer tax advisor, elementary school tutor and active member of Broadmoor United Methodist Church. Bill will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Visitation at Broadmoor United Methodist Church, 10230 Mollylea Drive, Baton Rouge, LA 70815, with memorial service.
