U.S. Senator. He graduated from Kent Academy, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1812 and commenced to practice law in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. He was Major General of the 4th Brigade of Rhode Island State Militia, (1816-23), served as a member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives, (1815-25), was Rhode Island Attorney General, (1825-43) and a member of the Rhode Island State Senate, (1843-44). In 1845, he was elected as a Whig to the United States Senate, serving until 1851. Not a candidate for reelection, he was again a member of the Rhode Island State Senate, (1851-52) and a member of the Rhode Island State House of Representatives, in 1857. He then retired from public life until his death at age 70.
