Leonidas Pendleton Spyker was the son of Rev. David Spyker and Elizabeth McCarroll Spyker. His father, David Spyker, was an educated man and minister who directed school academies in Abingdon, Virginia. According to the book History of Southwest Virginia, 1746 - 1786, Washington County, 1777 - 1870 by Lewis Preston Summers: "In the year 1833 there were four schools for boys in the town of Abingdon conducted by Rev. David Spyker, Rev. F.L.B. Shaver, Samuel Baillie and Mr. Hathaway, and one school for girls."

Leonida´s father, David, was born in Pennsylvania in 1786, the son of Capt. John Benjamin Spyker of Tulpehocken, Berks County, Pennsylvania and Catharine Lauer Spyker. ´The great-grandfather of Leonidas was John Peter Spycker who arrived in Philadephia, Pennsylvania on September 4, 1737 aboard the ship St. Andrew´s Galley from Palatine, Germany via Rotterdam.

In 1831 Leonidas´ parents (David and Elizabeth Spyker) moved the family to Tennessee from the Beaver Creek area near Abingdon, Washington County, Virginia. They arrived in Winchester, Franklin County, Tennessee on Oct 27, 1831.

Eventually Leonidas aka "L.P." Spyker moved to Louisiana and became the plantation owner of the New Hope plantation in Bastrop, Morehouse Parish, Louisiana. Leonidas married Sarah Mildred Gilmer in 1844. The Gilmers, were wealthy plantation owners in the state of Louisiana. In 1867 Leonidas died of yellow fever, after having survived the Civil War.
