U.S. Congressman. Successful in mercantile pursuits, he also was an extensive landowner, philanthropist and supervisor of Amsterdam, New York, (1813-16). He was a member of the New York State Assembly, (1816-17). In 1829, he was elected as an Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-first Congress, serving until 1831. Not seeking reelection, he was president of the board of trustees of Amsterdam, New York, in 1832 and then lived in retirement until his death at age 68.

Son of Elisha (1731-1815) and Sarah (1732-1815).
