Nevada Territorial Governor, U.S. Senator. He was appointed by President Abraham Lincoln as Governor of the newly-created territory of Nevada in 1861. He served in that office until 1864, when Nevada was admitted to the Union as the 36th state. He was then elected as a Republican Senator from Nevada to the United States Senate, joining William Morris Stewart as the State's first two Senators. He served from 1865 until 1873. Nye County, Nevada is named after him.
