Lowell graduated from Avon Park High School with the class of 1969. While in high school, he was a drummer in the band. He joined the United States Army, became a Sgt., serving in the 173rd Airborne Brigade. He was sent to South Vietnam on 16 November 1970. His death was listed as a hostile ground casualty. He died from wounds received when someone near him stepped on a land mine (other explosive device). Lowell's name is listed on the Vietnam War Memorial Wall in Washington, DC. The location there is: Panel 03W, Line 7.
