Miss May F. Wiffler Dies At 60; Former Welfare Bureau Aide

May F. Wiffler of 26 Union Place, long a member of the staff of the Yonkers Public Welfare Department died unexpectedly yesterday in the Yonkers Professional Hospital. She was sixty and had suffered a stroke Saturday.

Miss Wiffler began her service to the city Feb. 1, 1927 as secretary in the old Department of Charities. Later it became the Public Welfare Department and by Jan. 1 1945, Miss Wiffler had risen to the post of senior account clerk. She retired Dec. 1, 1945 because of an accidental disability.

Miss Wiffler was an accomplished pianist and in earlier years an outstanding athlete. She had studied music under the late Professor Meyerhoffer of Yonkers and had been presented with him in numerous concerts here and in nearby communities. She had been particularly fond of water sports, belonged to the Palisade Boat Club and was one of the few girls of her time to swim across the Hudson River.

A Native Of Yonkers, born in Yonkers, Miss Wiffler was a daughter of Joseph J. Wiffler who had been a long established seed merchant at the present Larkln Plaza site of the Otis Elevator Company. Her mother was the former Mary Morrissey. Miss Wiffler had attended Seton Academy, School Six and had been a leading student at Yonkers High School. She was a communicant of the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary. Surviving are her sisters, Mrs. John W.(Florence) Bancker; a brother, Joseph J. Wiffler, and a nephew, Joseph (Jerry) Wiffler Jr., all of Yonkers.
