Born in New Bedford the son of the late Joseph L. and Mary A. (Murphy) McCarthy, he was raised in Fairhaven, and resided in East Freetown since 1971. He summered with his family at Wilbur's Point in Fairhaven.
Mr. McCarthy was a headmaster at George R. Austin Middle School in Lakeville until he retired. He previously was headmaster at Apponequet High school, and director of the vocational school there. He was also a housemaster and teacher at New Bedford High School He served on the Freetown-Lakeville School Committee
He was a lifetime member of the National Education Association and a member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association and the Freetown Council on Aging.
He was an Army veteran who served in Germany. He enjoyed gardening, reading and bird-watching.
