Bill spent six years in the United States Marine Corps, serving as a sea-going Marine and served as Admiral Gallery's personal aide and later as an embassy guard at the American Embassy in Rabot, Morocco. This is where he met and married Odette Amaru.
Bill was a district salesman for Ford Motor Company Philco Division and soon became the district manager and was transferred to the Northwest. At age 44, Bill moved his family to Maui, Hawaii, where he developed, sold and managed condominiums. After leaving Maui, he volunteered for the U.S. Peace Corps and was posted in Cameroon, Africa. He then returned to the Northwest to be near his family.
He was active in his community as a member of the VFW, American Legion and the Eagles. He was elected and served as a Port Commissioner for the Port of Camas/Washougal. Even in his retirement he was a fixture in the community and could be seen sitting in the sun outside his apartment greeting everyone who walked by.
Bill is survived by his two daughters, Elizabeth Johnson of Camas, Wash., and Christine Caster of Corvallis, Ore.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his estranged wife, Odette Hawkins; and his sister, Mary Ann (Ken) Kelly; and a brother, Tim (Lorrie) Hawkins.
