Earle Clayton Benson, son of Carl and Lisa (Anderson) Benson was born on October 17, 1930, at Kathryn, North Dakota. He was raised on a farm near Nome, North Dakota and attended school at East Edge. He was united in marriage to Ruby Gunderson on July 29, 1951 at Lakota, North Dakota. Through this union one son and three daughters were born. Earle worked for Schultz and Lindsey Construction and Armor and Company in West Fargo, North Dakota, before moving his family to LaMoure, North Dakota. In LaMoure, Earle worked for a private trucking business and was engaged in farming. He worked for International Transport for a short time and in 1968, began driving truck for the Melroe Company in Gwinner, North Dakota, retiring in 1994.
Since then Earle kept busy doing some relief driving at Melroe, restoring old Bobcats, and helping with field work and harvest for his sons-in-law. Earle and Ruby started spending winters in Arizona in 1996. Earle received many safe driving awards during his career including an award for 2 million miles of accident free driving. He enjoyed many things in his life including camping and riding horse with his family, going to school activities for his grandchildren, and flying his airplane. He was especially thrilled when one of his grandsons learned to fly it too.
Earle died on Sunday, March 14, 2004, near Alamogordo, New Mexico, due to injuries suffered in a traffic accident. He was 73 years old
He is survived by his wife Ruby, LaMoure, ND; one son, Earling, Auburn, WA; two daughters, Iris (Bob) Leppert, Coeur d’Alene, ID, and Ione (Denny) Pherson, Rutland, ND; one son-in-law, Jeff Long, LaMoure, ND; and twelve grandchildren.
Also surviving Earle are two brothers, Bob (Mary Ann), Clancy, MT; and Milo, (Joyce) Nome, ND; and three sisters, Lorraine Forness, Kathryn, ND, Donna (Walt) Kratz, LaMoure, ND, and Judy (Wendell) Kopperud, Valley City, ND. Earle was preceded in death by his youngest daughter, Illa Long, his parents, and one brother-in-law.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 20, 2004 at the Church of the Nazerene in LaMoure at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Scott Henry officiating. A second service at Waldheim Lutheran Church near Kathryn, North Dakota was held Saturday at 2:30 P.M. WITH Rev. Bradley Edin officiating.
