US Congressman. Born in Loudoun County, Virginia, he moved with his parents to Preston, Virginia, 1856 and attended Oak Hill Academy. During the Civil War, he served as a Major in the 6th Regiment, West Virginia Infantry, Union Army of the Shenandoah. After the war, he relocated to Nebraska in 1866, studied law, was admitted to the bar, commenced to practice law in 1869, engaged in banking and was vice president of the Nebraska State Board of Agriculture. In 1885, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-ninth, Fiftieth and Fifty-first Congresses, serving until 1891. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he engaged in mining enterprises in Nevada and Utah, until his death at age 69 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
