Borne in Halle, Prussia; immigrated to the U.S. in 1848; rendered service in U.S. Army, 7th Infantry, discharged at Fort Gibson, Indian Territory in 1859; married Adaline Margaret Reichardt, a German immigrant in 1857. They had six children, Louisa, Mattie, Emma, Charles, Fred, & Henry.

Served on Little Rock School Board from 1869 to 1894, becoming its first president; president of Masonic Mutual Relief Association, a founder of Mount Holly Cemetery Association, and a founder of Temple B'Nai Israel, partnered in a mercantile business with F.A. Sarasin, later became president of Bank of Commerce; elected Little Rock Mayor in 1873 and served until a new Arkansas Constitution took effect in 1875.

A new elementary school on Sherman Street was named in his honor, the structure later became loft apartments.

Died in Colorado Springs, Colorado where he had traveled with his wife and daughter to recuperate from an illness.
