US Senator. He enlisted in the Union Army after the start of the Civil War, and was mustered in as a Private in Company H, 5th New York Volunteer Cavalry on October 22, 1861. He served until July 3, 1862, when he was discharged for disability. After the war, he graduated from Fort Edward Collegiate Institute New York, in 1865, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1867 and commenced to practice law in Nebraska City, Nebraska. He was a member of the Nebraska State constitutional convention in 1873 and judge of the district court of Nebraska in 1886. In 1899, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate and died before taking his seat.
