Ex-Allegan Mayor, C.J. Smith, dies
Funeral services were Tuesday for a former Allegan mayor and local business man who moved to Sturgis in 1970.
Clarence J. Smith, 64, formerly of Smith and Ross Implement, died Saturday morning in Kalamazoo's Bronson Hospital after a short illness.
Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.
Mr. Smith was born Jan. 5, 1909, in Jackson, the son of Claude and Libby Smith.
He and his family moved to Allegan in 1952 and he served as a city councilman and mayor as well as on the Community Council and the Allegan County Fair Board.
Mr. Smith was a member of the Methodist Church, past president of the Allegan Lions club, and a member of the Ot-well-Egan County Club.
In September 1970 he and his family moved to Sturgis where he worked with his son in the Dave Smith Pontiac dealership and where he was vice president of the Lions club a member of the Klinger Lake Country Club and the B.P.O.E. Lodge No. 1381.
Surviving are his wife, Beatrice; four children, Roger of Kalamazoo, Mrs. Fred (Marilyn) Fish and Dave of Sturgis and Richard Smith of El Segundo, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; one brother, Homer , of Desert Hot Springs, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. John (Florence) Burch of Kalamazoo, and Mrs. Lester (Bertha) Ford of Belding; and several nieces and nephews.
The family asked that those who wish may make contributions to the Michigan Heart Association.
