U.S. Congressman. He taught school, engaged in agricultural pursuits, studied law, was admitted to the bar and proceeded to practice. He was a member of the Virginia State House of Representatives, (1853-54) and moved to Missouri, in 1854. There he served in the Missouri State Senate, (1862-64) and served as a Colonel of the 8th Regiment, Missouri Volunteer Cavalry, Union Army, during the Civil War. After the war, he was elected as a Republican to the Fortieth Congress, serving (1867-69). After his term, he was elected the 15th Lieutenant Governor of Missouri, in 1870 and served until his death at age 43.
