Because of his great-great-grandfather's kindness to children during his lifetime, Rusty was buried just above the old casket, with the thought that along with God, his great-great-grandfather would care for him.
His obituary in the Sonora newspaper is as follows:
Final rites for Gerald Raymond Gardner, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald D. Gardner of Atwater, will be conducted Friday at 10 a.m. at Heuton Memorial chapel.
Father Stephen Stack will officiate and interment will follow in the Columbia City cemetery.
The boy died Monday in a San Francisco hospital following a five-week illness. He was born six weeks ago in Merced.
He is survived by his parents; two brothers, Alan, 4, and Warren 2 1/2; his maternal grandparents of Tuttletown, his paternal grandmother of Palm Springs, and his maternal great-grandmothers of Tuttletown and Corte Madera, California.
