He attended Centre College, graduated from the law department of Transylvania University, in 1842, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Platte City, Missouri, in 1845. He was Platte County attorney in 1850 and judge of the circuit court of Missouri, (1852-60). In 1861, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-seventh Congress, serving until 1863. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was a delegate to the Missouri State constitutional convention in 1875 and appointed judge of the Missouri State Supreme Court, serving (1876-79). After he left the bench, he resumed the practice of law. He died on his estate at age 92.
