U.S. Congressman. Moving to Missouri, he attended the Steelville Normal and Business Institute, was employed in a railroad office and taught school near Bourbon, Missouri, (1889-92). He graduated from the law department of the Missouri University, in 1894, was admitted to the bar and proceeded to practice law in Houston, Missouri. During the Spanish-American War, he served as a Sergeant in Company M, 2nd Regiment, Missouri Volunteer Infantry. After the war, he was prosecuting attorney of Texas County, (1901- 02) and judge of the nineteenth judicial circuit of Missouri, (1923-28(. In 1931, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-second Congress, serving until 1933. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he again served as judge of the nineteenth judicial circuit of Missouri, (1934-46) and practiced law until his death at age 87.
