Mr. Phillips served in the U.S. Army, where he received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for action during the Naples-Foggia campaign in Italy and Anzio. He was also a member of the First Special Service Force, a joint American-Canadian paratroops unit, known as the Devil's Brigade. Other distinguished honors included the Combat Infantry Badge, Jump wings, Victory Medal, Occupation Medal for the European Theater of Operations, Asiatic-Pacific and American Theater of Operations ribbons, as well as seven battle stars and two arrowheads.
