Virdis Eugene Atteberry, called "Gene" or Gean Atteberry was the 14th child out of 16 born to Thomas Jefferson Atteberry and Evelygn Johnston Atteberry, however two of the sixteen died very young. Although Gean's parents lived in Alabama for a number of years and many (but not all) of his brothers and sisters were born there, Gean and his wife Hattie decided to settle in Missouri as did his parents, Thomas and Evelygn and his older brother, Lee and with his family. Being one of the youngest of so many children, he never lacked playmates and the older ones doted on him. From those fourteen Atteberry children who lived to grow up and marry and have children of their own, there were over 65 in the next generation (Gean's sister, Alice - who spelled his name Gene - said there were 75 in all). Gean and Hattie were married for 73 years!
