In memory of William Niles
Age: 74 years old


A member of the board of governors and the secretary of the New York Zoological Society and originator of the plan for the Bronx River Parkway and drafter of the law creating the Parkway Commission of which he was vice president for many years. Taconic State Park when opened was dedicated in his honor. In recognition of his work in the development of the Bronx Parks and the Bronx River Parkway, Niles Triangle, was acquired and named for him in 1990. Junior High School No. 118 in the Bronx bears his name. He married in 1912 Florence Brown. They had three children: Charlotte, Roma, and Wm W. Niles, Jr. Charlotte was a member of the famed WASPS who flew bombers in WW II from US bases to overseas. Roma authored the story Whiskers, A Kitten's Story. Wm Jr died young in 1938.
