Robert S. Murray was a very hardworking farmer in Norval, Ontario. He and his wife raised four children, John, Martha, Donald, and Isabel. They were resident in Norval when Lucy Maud Montgomery lived there. Montgomery spent nine years in the village of Norval and said this of it: "Norval is so beautiful now that it takes my breath – those pine hills full of shadows – those river reaches – those bluffs of maple and smooth-trunked beech – with drifts of wild white blossom everywhere."
