Beddow Hall, in the Southwest Quad of Central Michigan University, was named for Ira who was head of the Department of Speech and Reading from 1905-1939.

Education: Bachelor of Arts from Albion College; AM from Columbia; PhD from University of Michigan. Graduate work: University of Chicago and London.

Taught at Elm Station in Detroit; was superintendant of schools in Plymouth; taught at West Side High School in Bay City and Olivet College. He subsequently taught history during summer sessions at CMU and became a full-time speech instructor in 1906 and retired in 1939.

According to the CMU site, he also started the first canoe rentals on the Chippewa River with a boat dubbed "the Faculty Frigate."
