According to "American Civil War Soldiers," John R. Brown enlisted as a private at Belfast, Maine, at 24 into Company F in the 3rd Infantry Regiment. On August 20, 1863, he transferred out of the 3rd and transferred in to Company D, 17th Infantry Regiment. On Dec 15, 1864, he transferred out of Co. D, of the 17th and transferred in to the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery Regiment.

In the 1880 census, John(39) lived in Caribou, Maine, with his wife Frances J.(32) and children: John G (14), William H. (12), Matilda J. (11), Rhoda P. (8), Lovina G. (4), and Bessie L. (2).

According to John's death certificate (Maine Death Records, 1617 - 1922) he died at the age of 60 on May 21, 1900 in Caribou, Maine and had been a resident there for 30 years. His birth date was listed as May 10, 1840. His birthplace was listed as Dixfield, Maine, and his occupation as farming. John's father's name was Phineas Brown and he was born at Plymouth, Massachusetts. His mother's maiden name was Patience Wallace and she was born in Livermore Falls, Maine. John's death was caused by lung disease, the contributory cause of which was exposure in the U.S. service.
