Memorial services for James "Big Jim" David Holt, 64, of Plainview will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 14, 2011, in the W.W. Rix Chapel with Chaplain Larry Haworth officiating. "Big Jim" died Wednesday, July 6, 2011, in Lubbock. Services are under the direction of Rix Funeral Directors.

James "Big Jim" David Holt was born on September 24, 1946 in Longview, TX to O.F. and Ruth (Williams) Holt. He served in the Army from 1967-1971 in the 11th Cavalry Division as an indirect artillery provider on North Vietnam and Vietcong. He spent most of his duty with the 155 Howitzer on search and destroy missions. For his service, Jim earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Metal with the Bronze Service Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and 3 Purple Hearts.

Jim enrolled in Stephen F. Austin State University where he earned a B.A. in Family Counseling. He was a substance abuse counselor for over 10 years. During his past time, Jim loved to sing and act. He was an avid supporter of MIA's and POW's by organizing several marches. Thru Jim's patriotism and hard work, he arranged for the Vietnam Combat Veteran's "Moving Wall" to come to Plainview. Jim was a founding member of the 11th Calvary ACVVC (11th Armored Cavalry Veterans of Vietnam and Cambodia). He served as their director for 3 years. Jim was so passionate about his military brothers and sisters that whenever he saw a service member in the airport or anywhere in uniform, he would walk up to them, put one arm around their shoulder, shake their hand, and say "Welcome home, Brother".

Jim was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by the love of his life, Patricia "Pat" Smothermon; her daughters whom he loved as his own, Patrice Holton Barlow of Childress, TSgt Carrie A. Holton of Langley, VA; and Mary Montoya of Centralia, WA; and 7 grandchildren, Zoey Hill, Jevon Holton, Haley Schoder, Carson Barlow, Emmette "Parker" Holton; Ayeden Perdue, and Lyric Montoya.

LUBBOCK — Memorial services for James David "Big Jim" Holt, 64, of Plainview, will be 10 a.m. Thursday, July 14, 2011, at W.W. Rix Funeral Directors Chapel in Lubbock, with Chaplain Larry Haworth officiating. "Big Jim" died Wednesday, July 6, 2011, in Lubbock.

Jim was born September 24, 1946, in Longview, to O.F. and Ruth Williams Holt. He served in the U.S. Army from 1967-71 in the 11th Cavalry Division. Jim was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Service Star and three Purple Hearts.

He received his certification in substance abuse counseling, where he worked with the State of Texas Prison System for more than 10 years.

Jim participated in several Longview Theatre productions, was an original member of "The Last Patrol," a nationwide awareness group for MIAs and POWs of Vietnam, arranged for the Vietnam Combat Veterans "Moving Wall" to be exhibited in Longview and Plainview and was a founding member of the 11th Cavalry ACVVC (11th Armored Cavalry Veterans of Vietnam and Cambodia). He was always aware of his military brothers and sisters in uniform, and when spotted, he would shake their hand and give them a hug and say, "Welcome home!"

He is survived by his stepchildren, Rhonda Faulkner and Valerie Miller; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and his ex-wife and best friend, Linda Davis.
