Jabez H. Brooks was the ninth and final child of Stephen Decatur Brooks and Hannah Bennett. He was born in the town of New Hartford, near Utica, New York.

In Waupaca County, Wisconsin, on July 2, 1856, Jabez married Ohio-born Martha J. Andrews. They had two daughters: Florence B. Brooks (married Major R. Shearer) and Emma Jane Brooks (married Edward Carey Yeamans). Sadly, Martha died at age 34, on January 28, 1867. She is buried in Brooks Cemetery outside Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Jabez next married Rhoda Anna Towsley, on April 12, 1868, at Oshkosh. Rhoda was divorced and brought two daughters from her first marriage to William Lampman: Maryetta Lampman (married Richard Harrison Fowler; after his death, A. Burrows) and Ella Loretta Lampman (married William Henry Groff).

Jabez farmed in the Oshkosh/Menasha area during the second half of the century, but he worked mostly as a carpenter. The 1900 census found him working as a railroad carpenter. As of the 1905 state census, Jabez was still doing carpentry and Rhoda lived in the home of her married granddaughter, Ella M. Hanford, and Rhoda's daughter, Mary Etta Fowler. Shortly before their deaths, the Brookses lived at Bellingham, Washington, in an apartment on Unity Street, near Fred G. and Ella May Hanford. Jabez died October 28, 1910, and Rhoda passed away a week later. Both are buried at Bay View Cemetery.
