Resided in Richland twp. throughout his life. He received a limited education in the common schools of his neighborhood, and early in life began to learn the trade of a carpenter, following the same until he attained the age of thirty years, when he took to farming. He was drafted during the Civil war, serving eleven months in the army, being stationed at Buford, S. C. In his political views, he is a strong Democrat, has served as supervisor and has taken an unusual amount of interest in local politics; religiously, he is an active member and liberal supporter of the Lutheran Church, being the only Lutheran in the family. Oct 8, 1853, he wedded Sarah Ann Ziegenfuss, born in Richland Twp., and a daughter of Samuel Ziegenfuss.
