John David German Adrian (Adrain)was one of the first citizens of Smith County, Texas and one of the earliest representatives to the Legislature; he rode horseback to Austin to participate. He was a charter member of First Baptist Church of Tyler, April 8, 1848, listed as J.G. Adrain, according to a historical sketch by R.A. Dean Church Clerk, written in 1938. This account states J. G. had grandchildren living in Ben Wheeler at that time. Research by others show him born in Franklin County Georgia. Family history compiled by Mitchell Adrian shows him coming through with the Cherokees enroute to the Territory as an interpreter. He served in The Confederate Army enlisting 13 March 1862 in the 14th Texas Infantry, Clark's Regiment, Company C., Captain William J. Smith and achieved rank of 1st Lieutenant. James Fowler Adrian admonished succeeding generations to still retain the name "German" in memory of the nationality of their early kin.

Adrian family history shows David Adrian (Adrain) born about 1755, immigrating to the U.S. South Carolina about 1769 where he worked as a Tailor, having ran away from home to come. Both dates may be incorrect as he was also said to be a Drummer in the Revolutionary War, being too young to serve as a regular soldier. He married Rachael Fleming, of Welsh descent and from Pennsylvania. After the war they moved to Georgia where he died about 1822 in Franklin City, Ga., gravesite unknown. This was John David German's grandparents.
