Ole Applen, who has been in failing health the last few years, has died Saturday in his home here, having nearly attained the age of 79 years.
His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Easton Applen of Bristol township, where he was born June 20, 1866. In his youth he learned the blacksmith trade, working six years in Lime Springs and one year in LeRoy. In 1898, he purchased a farm in York township, operating it 19 years while continuing his trade. He and his wife moved to Spring Valley in 1919, they lived here until 1928 when they moved to a Jordan township farm, returning here in 1935.
On May 1, 1895, he married Emma Torgeson at her home in York Township, and he survives with eight sons and daughters; Mrs. John Collins of Austin, Mrs. Earl Doering, Irving, and Raymond of Spring Valley, Mrs. Harry McCracken of Newton, Kan., Mrs. Floyd Dunlap of Mason City, Ia., Mrs. Perry Williams of Ponca, Okla., and Donald of Kasson; 24 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A son, Arthur, was killed in World war I, and two daughters, Mrs. Albert Hovey and Winifred, also are deceased.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Distel chapel and Trinity Lutheran church, with Rev. Erling Nilssen officiating. Interment was in Spring Valley cemetery. Six son-in-laws, Messrs. McCracken, Dunlap, Williams, Collins, Doering and Hovey, were pallbearers.
