Aberdeen American News (SD) – December 4, 1944
James Joseph Madden, 76, retired glass merchant and Aberdeen resident for 36 years, died early Sunday at his home in the Bolles block.
Born in New York City May 2, 1868, he later lived at Adrian, Minn., where he operated a wallpaper and paint store. He came to Aberdeen in 1908 where he established a glass company operated it until 1932. Aug. 23, 1898 he married Anna Louisa Rash at Mt. Sterling, Ill.
He is survived by his wife and five daughters, Mrs. Martha A. Hoerner, DeSmet; Mrs. Anna Schwartz, Modesto, Calif.; Mrs. Agnes Teske, Aberdeen; Mrs. Genevieve Schneider, Omaha; Mrs. Catherine Nielsen, McLaughlin, and four sons, James, Montevideo; John, Great Falls, Mont.; Martin, Portland, and Stephen of Billings, Mont., and nine grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, two sons and a daughter.
Rosary will be said at Kreuger's mortuary at 8 P. M. Tuesday.
Funeral service will be Wednesday at 9 a. m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Msgr. P. T. Monaghan officiating at high mass. Burial will be at St. Mary's cemetery.

Funeral services were held for at Sacred Heart church Wednesday for James Joseph Madden who died at his home Sunday. Msgr. P. T. Monaghan celebrated the requiem high Mass.
Pall bearers were J. J. Donahue, W. G. Guhin, Jake Herman, Pat Mundy, Fred Hatterscheidt and Frank McHugh.
Burial was at St. Mary's cemetery with the Rev. P. A. Colbert of Montevideo in charge of services at the grave.
Out of town relatives attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. James Madden and their children, Pat and Suzanne of Montevideo; Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Hoerner, De Smet; Mrs. C. L. Nielsen, McLaughlin; S. P. Madden, Billings, Mont., and Mr. and Mrs. Pete Schneider, Omaha.
