Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. During the Civil War, he served as a Colonel in Brigadier General Henry Birge's Union Brigades of the 19th Corps. For his actions at the Shenandoah Valley Campaign, Battle of the Third Winchester on September 19, 1864, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers.
