Born in Fayette, Wisconsin - the 2nd child of Casper Buettner and Elizabeth Ziegler. She was raised on a farm in Lake Henry and St. Martin, Stearns County, Minnesota as one of ten children.

She married 1 June 1875 John Clouse at Richmond, Stearns County MN. They farmed near Richmond until 1883 when they moved to Foxholm-Burlington area in North Dakota where they were among the first homesteaders.

Their children were: Eva Barbara (Joe Mahoney), Nicholas, Frank J., William Henry (Julia Haider), Elizabeth ( L.B. Tracy), John Jr (Veronica Goebel), Michael (Mary Hennes), Leo (Cecilia Hennes), Mary (Fenn Baker) and George (Mary). Two children died in infancy.

John had two children by a previous marriage to Anna Weinborn with whom he had two children. Anna died in childbirth.
