Abijah Lee Hughes, son of Joseph and Anna King Hughes, was born Dec. 3, 1863 and departed this life at the age of 92 years, 10 months and 2 days. He was the youngest and last surviving member of a family of twelve children. He was united in marriage to Martha Virginia Flowers, Oct. 1, 1891. To this union were born 9 children. His wife, one son, Willie Went and two daughters, Millie and Anna preceded him in death. Surviving him are the following children: Ora Loucks, Columbus, Ohio, Nora Thomas, Leafy Parsons and Della Hughes, Logan, Ohio, Roy Hughes, Detroit, Michigan and Hazel Sayre, Cottageville, W. Va.; 23 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
His entire life was spent in the same locality where he was born in the log cabin home of his father during the Civil War era. He engaged principally in farming, but his love for hunting, fishing, and trapping led to activities in fur-buying and selling. He loved to tell others of his experiences in the great outdoors and the pioneer methods they used in capturing wild game which they used for food and clothing. Uncle "Bige" as he was called by those who knew him well, will be greatly missed in his home and by all his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives, neighbors and friends. He was never too tired or too busy to lend a helping hand in time of need. To know him was to love him. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Armour Sayre at the Creston EUB church on Cottageville, Rt. 3, and burial was in the church cemetery by the Casto funeral home of Evans, W. Va. (Abijah's father was Job Hughes instead of Joseph--Ada Ruth Sayre)
