Alamosa resident Helen Apodaca, 97, passed away on April 14, 2014. Helen was born on May 24, 1916 in Alamosa, Colorado the daughter of Daniel Valdes Sr. and Manuelita Tapia Valdes. She was the last survivor of 13 siblings, six sisters and seven brothers.

Helen retired from J.C. Penney at the age of 70 years old. She loved helping people out by being a sales clerk. She would have worked longer if allowed to.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, a charter member of the Catholic Daughters, a member of Sacred Heart League, a member of the Cursillo Movement, a member of the Holy Family Society, a member of Legion of Mary, a member of Oblates of St. Bernard, an auxiliary member of the American Legion Post 113, a member of Loyola Star of the Americas, and a member of National Daughters of the American Revolution. She volunteered with the distribution of commodities when she was able to.

Helen enjoyed dancing, listening to music, and listening to the "World News". She kept up with political news. She loved to attend family functions and spending time with family and friends. Church attendance was very important to her. She loved going early to mass and saying the rosary with friendso.

She is survived by [edited for privacy]. She is also survived by 31 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Helen had many loving relatives, too many to mention, who would get in touch with her every now and then. Her special and caring friends, whom she loved dearly, are Lucy Bonney, Bernie Chavarria, and Josephine Romero.
Helen was preceded in death by first husband, and father of her children, Richard Atencio; son Richard Atencio Jr., second husband Vincent Apodaca; nieces Tita Baldwin and Dolores Mares; and nephews Edward Valdez, Christopher Carson IV, and Bill Carson.

A Vigil Service with Recitation of the Rosary will be held Saturday, Apr 19, 2014 at 7PM at the Romero Funeral Chapel in Alamosa, Colorado. A second Vigil Service will be held on Sunday, Apr 20, 2014 at 7PM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alamosa, CO. Funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Monday, April 21, 2014 at 10AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alamosa, CO, with interment to follow at the Alamosa Cemetery.
