Ethelwyn Gabb George Dies at 90; Was Active in Many Civic Projects
Ethelwyn Gabb George, 90, formerly of 320 Holcomb St. and widow of Dr. H. Louis George Jr., died Sunday morning at the Samaritan-Keep Home.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Stone Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bruce Smith, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Old Cedar Grove Cemetery, Chaumont.
Donations may be made to the Children's Miracle Network at the House of Good Samaritan or Stone Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are with Simpson-Cleveland Funeral Home.
Surviving are two sons, Dr. Henry L. George III, Watertown, and William G. George, Waynesboro, Pa; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A brother, William Gabb, and a sister, Kathryn Simmons, died before her.
Born in Bloomfield, Conn., Sept. 23, 1903, a daughter of Henry and Antoinette Goodwin Gabb, she graduated from Hartford (Conn.) Public High School in 1921 and from Simmons College, Boston, Mass., in 1925 as a nutritionist.
She was a nutritionist in Boston for the Boston Community Health Visiting Nurse Association and for Settlement House and Skinners Coffee House.
On June 15, 1928, she married Dr. H. Louis George at the home of her parents in Hartford with the Rev. J. Canfield Van Doren, uncle of the bridegroom, officiating.
The couple lived in Boston while Dr. George finished his residency, moving to Watertown in 1936 to enter into practice with his uncle, Dr. George B. Van Doren, and his brother, Dr. Wendell George. Dr. George died Dec. 1, 1991.
Mrs. George was a member of Stone Presbyterian Church. She had been a member of College Women’s Club of Jefferson County since 1936 and was a member and past president of the auxiliary of Crescent Yacht Club, Chaumont.
She was also a member and past president of the auxiliary of the House of Good Samaritan. She was active in the formation and running of the gift box at HGS and was a member of the auxiliary of the Medical Society of Jefferson County.
Also, she was a former president of the Thousand Islands Girl Scout Council.
