Husband to Eliza Thompson and father to: William, Josiah (J.V.),Ruth and Lenora.


After his parents died when he was three he moved to his grandmother Mary Markle's home in Westmoreland county and lived there until her death in 1832. He moved to Menallen township where the farmed until 1862. President Lincoln appointed him collector of internal revenue for the Twenty-first district of Pennsylvania where he served for four years. He was one of the original stockholders of the First National Bank of Uniontown where he was director from 1863 to 1870 and president until his death. He was also president of the Uniontown Building and Loan Association, a director of the Fayette County railroad and president of the Fayette County Agricultural Association, a trustee of Washington and Jefferson College and director of Western Theological Seminary at Allegheny City.
He was elected to the legislature in 1873 and a republican presidential elector, casting his vote for General Grant.
He was married in 1835 to Miss Eliza Caruthers of Sewickly township, Westmoreland county, a ruling elder in the Presbyterina church. They had four children: Ruth A. married to Dr. J.T. Shepler of Dunbar, Lenora M. married to John A. Niccolls of Uniontown, William M. and Josiah V. He died of pneumonia at his home in Menallen township, March 15, 1889.
