"Royal Bigbee, Veteran, Ex-Mayor, Dies At 88 - Newark's last Civil War veteran, Royal C. Bigbee, who was for two war-time terms mayor of Newark, died at 1:30 a.m. today at his home, 51 Charles St. He was 88 years old. Mr. Bigbee was prominent for many years in Newark business and politics. Although his Civil War service was brief ...... (missing section!) ..... 1864, at Fredericktown, in Company H., 142nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The following spring he re-enlisted with the Army of Cumberland. Mr. Bigbee was mayor of Newark for two terms from 1914 to 1917. Previously, he had been city treasurer. Only nine days ago, Felix R. Robertson, the only other Civil War veteran in Newark died ... (missing section) Mr. Bigbee is survived by his wife, Flora Bigbee; two sons, A. C. Bigbee, Newark, and Cecil Bigbee, Miami, Fla.; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Tribute will be paid Mr. Bigbee by the Spanish War Veterans. The Spanish War Veterans are expected to attend the services in a body in uniform.
