Funeral rites for the late Dr. James W. Ames, Veteran Detroit physician and one of Michigan's pioneer state legislators, will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from the family residence at 985 Frederick. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.

Dr. Ames, who was born in New Orleans, La., October 12, 1864, died Monday at his home following a long illness. He was outstanding in the city, county and state politics, as well as the medical field. He was educated at Straight university, in Louisiana, and secured his medical training at Howard University medical school in Washington, D.C. He served in the Michigan legislature from 1901 to 1902, during which time he sponsored the first bill for a free hospital in the City of Detroit.

Dr. Ames was a member of the Wayne County Board of Supervisors for 26 years, and served 19 years as chief diagnostician for the Detroit Board of Health. He was also a member of the Wayne County Medical society and was affiliated with various other professional and fraternal organizations.

Surviving the deceased are his widow, Mrs. Norma Ames; two daughters, Mrs. Marion Green and Mrs. Walter Turner, of Detroit; a son, William E. Ames, and five grandchildren. He was the father of the late Dr. Chester Ames, of this city, who died a little more than a year ago.
