Miss Jess was one of eleven children of Thomas Jefferson Stevens and Mary Isyphnia Henderson. She never married and lived all her life in Ladonia. Miss Jess had a house on Church street and my in-laws rented a room from her in the winter of 1938-39. On 9 Feb 1939, my husband, Robert Don Haden, was born in that very room. Dr. Sam Fry was late arriving and Miss Jess had already assisted with the delivery. Old Dr. Fry's only remaining duty was to fill out a birth certificate, which he did, listing my husband simply as "Baby Boy Haden".
I met Miss Jess, still living in that house, in 1961, and she delighted in repeating the story to me.
