Mrs. Ellen Garber

Mrs. Ellen Schell, wife of Col. Michael C. Garber, died at her home in Madison, Ind., March 28, 1908, of grip, aged 90 years, 11 months and eight days. She was born in Schellsburg April 20, 1817, and was a daughter of Peter and Eleanor Schell. She leaves two sons, Michael C. and William S. of Madison, and three daughters, Mrs. Sarah Siddall of Chicago and Maria K. and Elizabeth M. of Madison. She was a sister of Hon. William P. Schell of Bedford, Abraham E. Schell of Schellsburg and Mrs. Elmina Ankeny of Minneapolis, Minn. The average age of the four is 85½ years.

Her husband, who died many years ago, was at the time of his marriage a resident of Hollidaysburg, being interested there in a store and a foundry. He was a member of the firm of Garber and O'Conner which firm owned a line of freight boats, plying on the Pennsylvania canal between Columbia and Pittsburg. He also built a section of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. Later he moved to Madison where he published the daily and weekly Courier, which since his death has been published by his two sons. During the Civil War he was Quarter Master with the rank of Captain. He was breveted Major for gallantry at the battle of Mill Creek. He was later made Colonel by resolution introduced by Hon. James G. Blaine in the House for services in the Red River campaign. After the war he was tendered a commission in the regular army but preferred to return to civil life.
