Dr. Sugden, 86, died Thursday. He was the pastor of South Baptish Church in Lansing for about 40 years. He was a simple man with an intense love for the things of God.
A poem read at his funeral by his daughter, Sylvia, says a lot. It is a partial quote from a book titled "For the Love of Preaching" by Don Denyes.
He had four loves throughout his life,
The first is God, the second his wife,
A family he cradled to his breast,
Volumes of books read with great zest.
His life on eath was that of a saint,
Of toil and trouble, ne'er a complaint.
The pulpit was where he spread God's Word,
Of how salvation could be assured,
When the angels came to take him home.
He was married to Lucille Sugden, who survived him.
Dr. Warren Wiersbe, a very close friend was in charge of the funeral service.
