Artist and educator of the Harlem Rennaisance. He was married to Holcha Krake, a Danish tapestry weaver and ceramicist, who died of cancer in 1944. He died of acute pancreatitis.

Studied in France 1926-1929 where he met his future wife. They moved to Kerteminde, Denmark, where they married on May 28, 1930. They came to the United States to escape the impending WWII. Denmark was later invaded by the Nazis and people such as themselves were rounded up by the Gestapo.
