The funeral for Helen Gathje, 94, of Chatfield will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 12, 2011, at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Rev. Preston Paul officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Gathje died Friday, July 8, 2011, at the Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield, where she had resided since July 5, 2011.
Helen Irene Dushek was born on March 2, 1917 in Viola, Minn., to Harry and Della (Meredith) Dushek. She married LeRoy F. Gathje on October 23, 1934. Her former addresses were Viola, rural Chatfield and moved into Chatfield in 1966. LeRoy died on August 2, 1982. She was a cook at the Chatfield Schools for 16 years. Helen was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, St. Paul Ladies Aid, and was a Meals on Wheels volunteer and volunteered at the Chosen Valley Care Center. She loved sewing, gardening and canning. Survivors include three sons, Marvin (Donna) Gathje of Kellogg; Donald (Louise) Gathje of Rochester; Lawrence (Bernice) Gathje of Peterson; 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild; two brothers, Perry (June) Dushek of Oak Harbor, Wash.; Paul Dushek of Backus, Minn.; one sister, Mildred Gill, of Chatfield; sister-in-law Lois Dushek of Pine River, Minn.; caregiver Norma Gathje of Chatfield. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, LeRoy, two grandsons, Wayne and Brian; one brother, Chuck; two sisters, Muriel and Pearl.
Visitation will be Monday, July 11, 2011, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Riley Funeral Home in Chatfield and one hour before the service on Tuesday, July 12, at St. Paul Lutheran Church.Riley Funeral Home of Chatfield is handling the arrangements.
