Police Officer Brent Long was shot and killed as he and other officers served a felony warrant at a house.

A task force comprised of officers from the United States Marshals Service, Indiana State Police and Terre Haute Police Department, including Officer Long, knocked on the back door of the house on North 8th Street to serve a felony warrant. Several people exited the house, but not the wanted suspect. As the officers made entry into the home the suspect opened fire on them, striking Officer Long and his canine, Shadow. The suspect was shot and killed by return fire.

Officer Long was transported to Union Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds. Shadow was taken to a veterinary clinic and is expected to recover.

Officer Long had served with the Terre Haute Police Department for six years. He is survived by his wife, 11-year-old daughter, and 10-year-old son.

Veteran Terre Haute Police Officer Brent D. Long was killed in the line of duty on July 11, 2011. He was 34 years old.

Brent was born on March 25, 1977, in Terre Haute, Indiana, the son of Ron Long and Cheryl Long. On May 8, 1999, he married Danielle Bailey of Terre Haute. Brent played football for Terre Haute South High School and graduated from there in 1996. Brent worked for the Honey Creek Fire Department from Aug. 7, 1995 to Jan. 3, 2005, both as a full time and part time firefighter. Brent began his law enforcement career with the Vigo County Sheriff's Department on Jan. 14, 1997, as a dispatcher. Brent moved from dispatcher to jailer, where he was promoted to Assistant Jail commander. Brent was hired on the Terre Haute Police Department on Jan. 18, 2005. He graduated from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in May 2005 in Class 05-161. He was selected as a SWAT operator in April 2008 for the Terre Haute Special Response Team (SRT). He was then selected as a K9 handler in June 2008. He worked actively on the department's drug interdiction team. He was selected as a Sniper and transitioned to a Sniper position on the SRT Team in February 2011.

Brent's greatest accomplishment was his family. He was an excellent father, spouse, son, and brother. In his spare time, Brent enjoyed spending time with his wife and kids, fishing, hunting, and being with friends. Brent was a longtime member of the Fraternal Order of Police, International Union of Police Associates, and the National Rifle Association.

Full law enforcement honors will be given to Brent. Following the ceremony, Brent will be laid to rest at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 17, 2011, at Hulman Center. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 18, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Hulman Center in Terre Haute. Mattox-Ryan Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements.
