Marine Capt Contreras was assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron (HMLA)-169, Marine Aircraft Group-39, Marine Corps Air Station, Camp Pendleton, Calif. Killed in a UH-1N Huey helicopter crash in southern Iraq. Contreras had enough brothers to put together a basketball team. When the boys were young, their parents bought a 10-acre plot in Oregon and put a court in the back yard. On summer nights, it was full of Contreras brothers and their friends until 3 or 4 in the morning. Aaron finished in the top 10 percent of his class, which would have allowed him to fly fighter jets. But he knew that would mean frequent deployments, and he was a family man. Aaron married during college, and the couple had a young son. He decided to fly helicopters instead. He wanted to be apart from his family as little as possible. Aaron is survived by his wife, Janelle, and the couple's three children.
