From "A completed century, 1826-1926; the story of Heywood-Wakefield Company" printed by the Heywood-Wakefield Co. in 1926:
A few years before Mr. Heywood's death, the son of an employee lost his fingers in the factory. Mr. Heywood suggested that the case be given attention at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and, when the father of the boy said that it would be impossible because funds were lacking, remarked that he himself had money enough. "And I'll tell you what I want to do," he continued; "cases of this sort are coming up all the time and I hope to build a hospital which can attend to them."
