Pelham Gaynor Ables passed away on March 22, 2008, at Trinity Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama. Mr. Ables was born on July 23, 1929, in Gadsden, Alabama. Pelham graduated from Glencoe High School in 1947. He entered the Navy in January of 1948 and served his country during the Korean Conflict on the USS Oberon…a group that bonded so closely that they continue to meet yearly till this day. After being discharged from the service in December of 1951, he attended Jacksonville State University. There he received a B.S. degree in business. Pelham later obtained a Master's Degree in Business Education from the University of Mississippt, a Master of Public Administration from Jacksonville State University, and then continued his education by earning a AA Certificate from Auburn University. Later, Pelham received his school administration certificate from Alabama A&M University. Mr. Ables taught school for thirty years. He felt blessed to spend most of his career as a beloved teacher at Plainview High School. He also taught at Gadsden State and Northeast State Community College. Pelham was a private pilot, a member, and past president of the Experimental Aircraft Association. One of his proudest achievements was building his own airplane. Pelham was married to Jane Cole of Fort Payne. He leaves behind a son, Steven Ried Ables of Madison along with a daughter and son-in-law, Travis and Jennifer Ables Benefield of Hazel Green. In addition he is survived by two granddaughters, Anna Elizabeth Benefield and Emily Caroline Benefield, also of Hazel Green. Other survivors include a sister Monda Bailey of Hokes Bluff and a brother Joseph Ables of Lakeland, Florida. Visitation for Pelham Gaynor Ables will be at Wilson's Funeral Home in Fort Payne, Alabama, on March 23rd from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. He will lie in state on Monday, March 24th from 10:00 until 12:00. A graveside service will be held on Monday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Loveless Cemetery, (McNutt Memorial Methodist Church), on Lookout Mountain.
