Charles [sic] H. Alford, one of Willimantic’s prominent citizens and business men died, suddenly of heart disease at 5:30 yesterday afternoon. He had gone down stairs, at his home after lunch and his daughter, following shortly afterwards, found him unconscious.
He was born in Otis, Mass., April 18, 1827, his parents being Roman and Charlotte Case Alford. He was graduated from the Westfield Normal School and at the age of 21 taught school in Springfield, Mass. In 1851 he went to Riverton, where, after serving for a period as clerk in his uncle’s store he bought out the Union Shoe Company. At the outbreak of the Civil War he was engaged in Virginia and Maryland as a sutler with General McClellan’s forces.

He came to Willimantic in 1862 and in company with James Alford conducted a grocery business. Some time later he became engaged in the hardware business with his son, Howard Alford, who died in 1893 and whose interests were taken up by Carl R. Alford, another son, who conducted the business until the present time.

Mr. Alford was married in Riverton November 13, 1854, to Adeline Cadwell.

Besides his wife, three children survive him, Adelaide Louise, Maud E. and Carl R., all of Willimantic.

Mr. Alford was a democrat and served as first selectman in 1875 and during that time had charge of building the horseshoe bridge. He was a member of the Masonic Veteran Association and from his early boyhood was a member of the Congregational Church.
