US Senator. She was the first woman elected a United States Senator, the first woman elected as a Republican and the first female Senator from the State of South Dakota. She graduated from Huron College in 1911, taught in the public high schools of South Dakota, (1912-18), was the first woman member of the South Dakota State House of Representatives, (1923-27) and served as Secretary of State of South Dakota, (1927-31). She also was a member of the South Dakota State Securities Commission, (1931-33) and was successful in the life insurance business. In 1938, he was as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Peter Norbeck, serving until 1939. In 1940, she became the first woman to deliver a presidential nominating speech at a national convention. Not a not a candidate for election, she resumed the life insurance business, was a member of the South Dakota Board of Charities and Corrections, (1943-570 and a agent for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, (1950-86).
